Rome Historical Society (RHS) and the Afro-American Heritage Association (AAHA) will host a 43rd annual African American History Month virtual program on February 28, 2021 at 3pm. The topic will be the Black family with a focus on its role in the evolution and significance of the Tuskegee Airmen. This virtual program will be available on the RHS Facebook page (facebook.com/romehistorical) and via phone conference. To participate by phone, you must register in advance by using this link.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. RHS Trustee and AAHA President, Willie Talmadge, will introduce the program and AAHA Treasurer Leonard Martin will introduce the guest speaker, Mr. Michael Joseph II. Mr. Michael Joseph II is a senior engineer at Corning and current historian for the Claude B. Govan Tri-State Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Incorporated. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first black military aviators in the United States Military. In a time when the U.S. saw racial segregation and discrimination these determined men and women worked hard to serve our country. Today most everyone is aware of these few details; however, there is so much more to the story.
Every American owes a debt of gratitude to the Airmen who after the war continued to serve in amazing ways. In this program Mr. Michael Joseph II will describe Tuskegee Airmen post war contributions from his personal experiences; detailing how they continued to break boundaries and shape the culture of our nation. RHS will be accepting donations on behalf of the AAHA one week prior and one week after this virtual program. All monetary donations made via romehistoricalsociety.org between Monday, February 22nd and Friday, March 5th will be given to the AAHA.
